WELCOME TO JACKSON OBEDIENCE TRAINING CLUB

Welcome to JOTC

JOTC is an all volunteer, non-profit organization, located in Jackson, Mississippi, dedicated to dog obedience training, the advancement of responsible dog ownership and the promotion of the sport of dog obedience. The club was founded in 1969 and is licensed by the American Kennel Club.

The club offers classes to the general public in the Jackson, MS metro area. Many levels of dog obedience, from introductory puppy classes to advanced competition obedience are taught.  All classes are taught by volunteers who have many years in training their own dogs, as well as teaching others how to train their dogs. Most instructors, with their own dogs compete in multiple dog sports.  JOTC also sponsors AKC obedience and Rally trials and offers testing, such as for the Canine Good Citizen certificate or title.  Demonstrations of obedience trained dogs are also available.

What is Obedience Training?

Basic obedience training is the first step in learning how to communicate with your dog in a meaningful way. By utilizing a positive approach, you can teach your dog useful commands, which make him a better family member as well as giving the dog an outlet to meet his need to please his master.  These commands start with walking at your side on a leash, (heeling), sit, down, (lie down) off  (no jumping on people) and stay (stay where I tell you, until I release you). Many more commands are learned as training progresses.

Why Should You Train Your Dog?

  • You will build a better, stronger relationship with your dog through training.
  • To have your dog under control and responsive to your commands. Wouldn’t it be nice to call your dog and have him come running to you?
  • Your dog’s quick response to an obedience command could save his life. If your dog is about to rush into traffic or eat something deadly, you want him to understand and obey immediately when you tell him to stop.
  • Your dog will learn to be polite at all times, even in public, around other dogs, strangers and with many distractions.
  • A well-mannered, well trained dog, teamed with a responsible pet owner is absolutely necessary to reduce the risk of dog aggression. Dog bites could result in a lawsuit and even your dog being euthanized. Obedience training is a very subtle, non-threatening way of gaining control over a dog that is prone to aggression. Once your dog has been properly socialized and trained, the chances of him biting someone are significantly reduced.
  • Learn how to communicate with your dog so that he knows what you expect of him. This will make both dog’s life and yours happier and less stressful.
